The federal government buys the same things that private sector businesses do. They buy medical supplies, software, fruits, and vegetables. They also buy professional services, pay for companies to manage their buildings, and run research and development operations. They pay for hospitals and doctors, they buy drugs, hospital supplies and equipment. You name it, someone in the federal government spends money on it and will hire your company to do it.

When the government sets a contract aside for small business they limit the competition to only small businesses. If a large business wants to compete for those contracts, they have to “team” with a small business. This limitation in contracting makes it easier for small businesses to compete for and win federal contracts.
