5 Reasons To Start Your Own Federal Contracting Business

  • The federal government spends a lot of money!
    • In 2020 the federal government spent more than $667 BILLION on goods and services, an increase of more than $70 BILLION over what was spent in 2019.  The numbers are not out, but 2021 was significantly higher in 2021.
  • They buy almost everything.
    • The federal government buys the same things that private sector businesses do.  They buy medical supplies, software, fruits, and vegetables.  They also buy professional services, pay for companies to manage their buildings, and run research and development operations.  They pay for hospitals and doctors, they buy drugs, hospital supplies and equipment.  You name it, someone in the federal government spends money on it and will hire your company to do it.

      WhatTheGovBuys
  • They use the same contracting methods that is used outside the federal government
    • The way that the federal government awards contracts and pays its venders may seem complicated, but it’s no different than how things are done by any other business.  They use contacts like “Fixed Price” and “Time and Materials” each of these contract types have very well-defined approaches, applications, and requirements.

      HowTheGovBuys
  • Unlike the private sector, the government is focused on small business
    • In 2021 the federal government contracted a record breaking $145.7 Billion in contracts to small business.  These small business “set asides” are a huge opportunity.  When the government sets a contract aside for small business they limit the competition to only small businesses.  If a large business wants to compete for those contracts, they have to “team” with a small business.  This limitation in contracting makes it easier for small businesses to compete for and win federal contracts.
